About the scheme

At CaVSA we offer borough residents from 16 to 19 year old (up to 25 if you are registered disabled) the chance to combine undertaking academic qualifications and working in a busy third sector environment – learning skills that on the job training provides in a constantly changing environment. The Third Sector voluntary sector offers a unique opportunity to learn transferable skills to help meet the needs of challenging and rewarding work.

CaVSA offers a chance to learn skills across the board to give apprentices a sample of the work they wish to specialise in. Currently, CaVSA are working alongside organisations that specialise in health and social care, finance, disability and housing support, showing the wide range of opportunities available.

Funded by North Fulham NDC, CaVSA have placed 11 apprentices in local organisations (January 2010) to learn valuable skills that could lead to permanent employment, whilst studying at Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College to NVQ Level 2, with plans for further schemes within the local area.

2011 Third Sector Apprenticeship Programme

The current cohort of Apprentices are approximately half way through their scheme and so we look towards the future and the next apprentices that will learn their trade in the Third Sector in Hammersmith & Fulham. At this stage we need the help of CaVSA member organisations to get the next scheme up and running.

In 2009-2010, we obtained funding from the North Fulham NDC to run the scheme. For the next year we are actively looking for a funding stream to assist the scheme. However, as all third sector organisations apply for their own funding, we encourage all CaVSA members to apply for their own funding to employ an apprentice and join the Third Sector Apprenticeship Scheme run by CaVSA. The programme will assist apprentices in gaining skills that will help them gain long term employment.

The scheme is aimed at 16-19 year olds (up to 25 if registered disabled) that live in the local area and currently has 14 participating organisations. Organisations looking to take on an apprentice are invited to contact Michael Brosnan, the Apprenticeship Coordinator, for advice on the scheme, the benefits of apprenticeships and what is required to manage an apprentice.

Third Sector Apprenticeship Mentors

The Third Sector Apprenticeship Scheme currently has 15 apprentices and all are progressing well in their positions and have identified a need to bring in outside support and advice. Someone they can talk to about what is expected in the world of work, and how they can overcome barriers that exist between them and their goals. To enable them to progress further we would like to encourage them to talk to someone and would like to set up a mentoring scheme that can assist their progress into full time employment or training for the next step in their careers.

Mentors will undergo training to help them identify their role and how to progress and coach apprentices through the early stages of their careers. Information that can be asked and answered in a friendly and comfortable manner away from the office politics and expectations that can generate confrontation and resentment with senior employees. For more information please call the Third Sector Apprenticeship Coordinator on 020 8748 6345 or 07970 996 312 or email Michael Brosnan
